Camden Park Estate – Camden NSW – (Conservation Plan)

Project 1: Research and fieldwork for a conservation plan for the large and important property settled by the pioneering Macarthur family. Project comprised study of historic farm buildings and property plantings, and natural vegetation; assessment of landscape character and visual quality; outline of natural, historic, scientific, social and aesthetic significance; recommendations for the resolution of present and proposed landuses; and management guidelines for the entire property excluding the parcel of land comprising the Macarthur family home and immediate gardens.

The Everglades Garden, Leura NSW – (Conservation Plan)

Project: Historic research and report outlining the history, statement of significance, conservation policy and management guidelines for Australia’s first National Trust-classified garden and cold climate arboretum, and one of NSW’ most popular gardens for public visits. Amid panoramic views of the Jamison Valley, it comprises a 1930s house, pool and squash court; and 5.2 ha of natural bushland and important terraced gardens designed by Paul Sorensen.

Ku-ring-gai Visual Character Study

Project: Evaluation of streetscape character in the Municipality of Ku-ring-gai (Sydney) in order to amend Development Control Plan guidelines, to assist in the planning and assessment of future residential development, to maintain the existing character as far as possible, to minimise aesthetically insensitive development (particularly in areas of high visual quality and cultural heritage) and to accommodate building alterations or additions without affecting the overall streetscape.

Works involved:

    • Developing criteria for the classification of character categories
    • Developing preliminary inventory sheets and a ranking system for streets
    • Undertaking a detailed inventory of four streetscape areas within four broad character categories as a pilot study for a future street-by-street assessment of the entire municipality
    • Ranking the broad categories and individual streetscapes and
    • Recommending development controls
